A wave of sorrow has hit the family of the renowned Indian playback singer Chitra Iyer. Her 54-year-old sister, Sharda Iyer, lost her life in a tragic accident while trekking in Oman’s Jebel Shams region. The heartbreaking incident took place on January 2, leaving family members and fans deeply shocked.
What Happened in Oman?
According to media reports, Sharda Iyer, who formerly worked as a manager with Oman Air, had gone trekking in the Wadi Ghul area of Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. This region is known for its cliffs, rocky paths, and risky terrain, making it dangerous even for experienced trekkers.
Officials have stated that while the exact cause of death is still under investigation, early information suggests that Sharda met with a fatal accident during the trek.

Another Loss Within Weeks
This tragedy comes at an especially painful time for the Iyer family. Chitra Iyer’s father passed away on December 11, barely 25 days before Sharda’s death. Sharda had travelled to India to attend her father’s funeral and returned to Oman on December 24.
Sadly, no one imagined that fate would take such a cruel turn so soon.
Sharda’s body has since been brought to Kerala, and according to family sources, her last rites will be performed on January 7 at their ancestral home in Thazhava.
